Surfing School Frequently Asked Questions

What will I Learn at a surf lesson?

We'll teach you the surfing skills you want to attain.
For example, the 5 day package, which takes you through Safe Surfing Certificate level's 1-3, has the following Goals & Educational Objectives:
Lesson 1: To have fun! To focus on safety, paddling and catching waves and standing up!
2: Length of ride, stance and standing technique
3: Reading waves, how to push through the surf zone, advanced paddling technique
4: Turning and gaining speed, advanced surf safety & principles of surf rescues
5: Catching and riding unbroken waves, surfing etiquette

How long will it take me to learn to surf at the surf school?

It depends on your strength, flexibility, co-ordination and of course your dedication! We get nearly every able bodied person to their feet in their first lesson. We recommend at least a package of three in close succession to get the very basic technique and safety concepts. A package of five will give you better understanding of how to read the ocean.

Of course, all surfing packages should be followed up if you are not getting to the beach frequently and private surf lessons are ideal for people wanting to take it to the next step catching green waves and executing cool manoeuvres.

How long does a surf lessons go for?

During your surfing lesson you will be on the beach for about 1.5 hours and it takes 2 hours to complete the class including set up and pack up time. A private surfing lesson is at least 1 hour in the water.

Does surfing equipment cost extra with the surf lesson?

The cost of your Surf lesson includes your surfboard and wetsuit - if you have your own wetsuit we prefer you use it. We use our surfboards for group lesson and private lessons unless you o.k. it with your instructor to use your own if you are one on one with your teacher.

What if I want to practice surfing between my surf lessons?

We encourage you to hire the equipment you are using in your classes either as a one day package so you can keep it on the beach with you for the rest of the day. Or you can hire the board and wetsuit at a weekly rate which is the best value for money and you will get the most from your instruction if you can practice in between each class.

What surfing equipment is supplied by your surf school?

At Broulee Surf school we supply warm, top of the range O'neill wetsuits and "Soft" beginners to intermediate "Mini Malibu" Surfboards which are safe, stable and easy to learn on.
We have a range wetsuit sizes from size 6 to extra extra large!

When Can I Learn to Surf?

Group and private surf lessons are held on Weekends & every day in school holidays. Lessons on Weekdays are also available by appointment.

What Should I Bring?

Sunscreen, swimmers, a towel and a smile.

What if its raining on the day of my class?

We surf whether its raining or beautiful and sunny. If it is raining, surfing is the best thing you can do as you are already wet and its a great way to get out of the house (or get the kids out of the house!) if it's bad weather. The only time a lesson is cancelled is in the VERY rare event that there are absolutely no waves.

How Do I Pay?

We prefer that you pay a booking deposit by credit card or cheque to confirm your place and bring the balance as cash on the day.

Where do I go once I get to the beach for my lesson?

Have a look at the contact & location page for maps and directions to find our surf trailers on the allocated beaches in Broulee. You should arrive at least 15 mins before a lesson is due to commence to get your wetsuit, payment and surfboard organised.

How do I get to the Surf School?

Broulee is best accessed by car, however there are daily bus services from Canberra and Sydney to the South Coast NSW. Getting around can be difficult in either town if you dont have a car. If you are catching a bus we recommend you stay in our Broulee Surf Apartment accommodation in North Broulee where the bus arrives at the doorstep from ACT and we surf right out front!

Where can I stay on the South Coast while attending the surf school?

We now offer the Broulee Beach Surf Accommodation. This self contained holiday rental apartment is a 3 bedroom townhouse catering for up to 9 people. The accommodation is located conveniently - right next door to the Broulee Surf School and just 50 meters from the beach!

Also ask about the Broulee Surf Apartment which is located in the same complex as the surf school and is available throughout the summer season - comfortable accommodation for up to 8 people.

Special accommodation packages with surf lessons included are available.

Broulee has a range of accommodation from up market, boutique style hotels to on site vans and cabins. You will find accommodation styles ranging from family holiday apartments and even budget accommodation with backpackers or camping sites closeby or in the surrounding NSW South Coast holiday towns like Batemans Bay and Mollymook.

We can recommend a place for individual travellers, couples and groups to stay or look at our surf and tourism links page for some ideas.

Where can I buy a second hand surfboard?

THE MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION! We sell a few of our used soft boards at the end of every season for about $350 but they go fast! If you want a board it is best to put a deposit down and we will keep it for you till end of summer holidays or easter. Otherwise used boards are very difficult to get as everyone is learning to surf and no-one seems to be selling them.

If you are buying a new surfboard we recommend investing in an intermediate board that you can resell very easily once you have progressed and keep investing that money into new equipment as you improve over time. Ask us about which surf shop to buy your board and what type of surfboard best suits your ability.
